The 5 Best Ways to Get Free Website Promotion

The thing to remember about free website promotion is that nothing is ever truly free. If you don’t spend money promoting your website, you’re going to have to spend time. So why waste time trying to market your website using methods that will only bring you minuscule returns, if any? If you're prepared to work on them, these five free website promotion techniques

1. Work on website SEO.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimizationand it's the best thing since sliced bread for promoting your website because it's easy to learn and apply the basics to your own website(s).
Through working on website SEO, you can improve the page rankings of your web pages and drive more traffic to your site. And isn't that the ultimate goal? Get started with my 7 Basic Rules of Search Engine Optimization.

Tip: If you are using non-text content on your web page(s), such as photos, image maps or JavaScript, include text in the ALT tag so the search engines have something they can read.
2. Reciprocal linking.
Having other people put a link to your site on their site is a great way to get free website promotion.
Be aware though that getting inbound links to your website is not a numbers game; it's the quality of the links that really matters. So you want to focus your linking efforts on relevant quality sites.
3. Write articles.
The basic theory of article marketing is that you write an article and then offer it for free to various websites, blogs, magazines etc.
Your article, of course, ends with a resource box or 'blurb' that promotes you and your website.
The beauty of this website promotion strategy is that if you get your articles published on popular, long-lived websites or in well-known magazines, they can be sitting there promoting your website for a long, long time with no further effort on your part.
However, there are catches. First, you have to be able to write well on a topic or topics that other people will want to read and/or publish. Second, you have to find the quality places for your articles to be published and persuade the people making the decisions to publish them.
Tip: Find the websites or magazines you want to be published on first, and then spend some time reading the content to see what type of material they might want and if there are any obvious holes in their content that you could cover. Then tailor your material to that particular site or magazine's needs.
4. Use social media.
Social media isn't just a great place to connect with friends and family; it's also a great place to promote your website and/or business as so many people are using it. For instance, a Nielsen study found that Internet users spend 21.3% of their time on social networking sites while PQ Media found the average U.S. Internet user spends around 33 hours per month on the Internet and about 8 of those hours on social media (5 Social Media Tips for Finding and Engaging Your Target Audience: New Research, Social Media Examiner).
Participating in social media can be a great way to get free website promotion as it can give you high visibility at low cost. To successfully market your website using social media, though, you’ll need a plan. Learn How to Create a Social Media Plan for your small business.
Tip: Different social media attracts different types of people. Before investing time in using a particular social media and building up a group of followers, make sure you've chosen the right social media for your marketing purposes. See how to pick the social media that's the best fit with your business.
5. Create/present quality content.
This is the catch – none of the techniques above are going to work very well for you if you don’t have quality content on your site – the kind of content that other people want to read and promote on their own blogs/websites and on social media.
So somewhere on your website, you need to have a blog and/or articles presenting content that is relevant to your target market.
Where will you get such content? Basically, you are either going to write it yourself or get someone else to write it. The "someone else" might be staff, hired writers or guest bloggers. Which approach you choose depends on your budget as well as your time and talents.
Writing your own blog can be a very effective way to market a website because by blogging about your subject, you'll get the chance to become an active member of the blogging community, building a web of relationships and links. And of course, your blog will be keyword rich, increasing your Search Engine Optimization.
Tip: Most blogs include the facility to make comments on posts. When you're reading another blog that's relevant to your topic, take the time to comment on a post (making sure that your comment says something that's equally relevant). It's another opportunity to promote yourself and your website for free – while getting known in the blogging community.
Consistency is Key
These are not the only ways to get free website promotion of course. But these are the best, and if you select several of these and concentrate on doing them consistently over a period of time, they'll yield the return in increased site traffic that you're looking for.

Jessica Simpson has come a long way since her marriage to Nick Lachey. When the two were together, she was a pop-music princess and rising reality-TV star.

Jessica Simpson and husband Nick Lachey arrives at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards.
But since their 2006 split, Simpson's life has taken some major turns. She's married to Eric Johnson, she's a mother of two, and she's the mogul behind a billion-dollar retail empire.
During an interview on CNBC's "Closing Bell," Simpson admitted that now she views her time with Lachey as a big mistake — at least when it comes to dollars and cents.
The surprising reveal came when anchor Kelly Evans asked Simpson about past financial blunders.
"The biggest money mistakes? I don't know," Simpson said. After a pause, she added, "For some reason I thought of my first marriage!"
Evans assured her that response wasn't rare. "That's actually a common answer, believe it or not."

Simpson didn't elaborate about why she felt the marriage was a money mistake, but their shared reality show, "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica," was a success at the time.
It's just not the sort of success she wants to revisit.
"That's very rear view [mirror]," she recently told TODAY. "Having a camera on me at all times, I mean, we all know I stick my foot in my mouth a little bit too much."
Now she's looking ahead at a return to music and continued investment in her clothing, beauty and more brand. As for her financial future, Simpson told "Closing Bell," "I always say I'm ready for another billion."

California Town of 2,700 Warned Ahead of Explosive Wildfire

A California town of around 2,700 people was told to prepare to evacuate as a raging wildfire spurred on by dry conditions grew Friday, fire officials said.
The town of San Andreas about 60 miles southeast of Sacramento was told to be prepared to flee if the so-called Butte Fire, which swelled to more than nearly 65,000 acres Friday, approaches, the California Department of Fire and Forestry Protection said.
The department, also known as Cal Fire, initially said the town was under a mandatory evacuation order, but a short time later lifted the order and asked residents to be prepared.
The fire changed direction after the order was put out, Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant told The Associated Press. "The fire was quickly approaching the community," he said.
California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency Friday for Amador and Calaveras counties, where the Butte Fire is located.
At least six homes have been destroyed and 6,400 structures are threatened, Cal Fire said.
The Butte Fire broke out at 2:26 p.m. Wednesday east of Jackson and quickly spread. It was just over 100 acres Wednesday and grew to more than 14,500 acres by that evening before more than doubling in size to 32,000 acres by Friday morning. The fire was 5 percent contained Friday, Cal Fire said.
The department said Friday that the fire was experiencing "unprecedented fire conditions and growth."

Steep terrain was causing the fire to spread rapidly, as the heat from flames warms areas above the fire and makes it more likely to ignite, Cal Fire Capt. Josh Rubinstein said. The fire was expanding in all directions, but was
"The topography makes fighting the fire on the ground extremely difficult," Rubinstein said. "We have over 20 aircraft flying from sunup to sundown."
California is in its fourth year of a historic drought, creating dry conditions that make large parts of the state more susceptible to wildfires. High temperatures haven't helped — much of California was in the midst of a heat wave Friday, and temperatures were in the low 90s in the nearby town of Jackson, according to the National Weather Service.
More than 2,500 firefighters were battling the blaze in Amador and Calaveras counties Friday, and seven air tankers were among the aircraft attacking the fire, Cal Fire said. The department warned of "explosive fire conditions" made worse by steep topography and high temperatures.
Cal Fire Incident Commander Phil Veneris warned anyone near the fire that "if you see smoke or fire approaching your community, evacuate the area immediately."

1 000 000 000 on Facebook!

ver one billion people used Facebook last Monday. This is the first time the site has had this many visitors in one day. The CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, said it was an important achievement for his company. He posted on his own Facebook profile that: "We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day." He said that on Monday, "one in seven people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family". He added that: "This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world." Mr Zuckerberg also said a connected world, "brings stronger relationships with those you love".

Zuckerberg created Facebook in 2004, while he was a student at Harvard University. The website quickly became one of the biggest sites in the world. Today, it has nearly 1.5 billion users and Zuckerberg thinks that number will grow. In October 2012, he announced that Facebook had one billion users who used the site at least once a month. Three years later, the site had one billion visitors in just one day. Zuckerberg said the company needs to grow a lot in countries where Facebook isn't so popular, such as in many African and Asian countries and some in Central and South America. Facebook has made Zuckerberg the ninth richest person in the world, at the age of 31.

Wofford gets Jimmered, falls 74-66 to BYU

DENVER (AP) — Slowing down The Jimmer? It's possible.

Stopping him altogether? Well, as the sign in the stands put it, "Fredette about it."

Wofford used about every combination of defense imaginable Thursday night, but still got "Jimmered" by the nation's leading scorer. Jimmer Fredette dropped in 32 points to lead third-seeded Brigham Young to a 74-66 victory over the Terriers in the NCAA tournament.

Fredette went 10 for 25, made 12 trips to the free-throw line and added seven assists to help the Cougars win their school-record 31st game. Next, they'll play the winner of St. John's and Gonzaga in the Southeast region.

"He's a great player, great scorer," said …

Santander to miss profit target after Q3 drop

MADRID (AP) — Spanish financial group Banco Santander said Thursday its third-quarter profits plunged 26 percent and warned it won't meet its earnings target for the year due to new government-ordered provisioning norms.

The eurozone's largest bank by market capitalization said it made a profit of €1.64 billion ($2.26 billion) in the July-September period compared with €2.22 billion in same quarter of 2009. Revenue fell 5 percent to €10 billion.

The bank said that under new central bank norms it had to set aside €472 million in the third quarter to cover loan losses.

"As a result of this one-time provision, 2010 profit is expected to be below the estimate announced at …

Should you go or stay?

Changing jobs should not be done on a whim. So doing your due diligence will, in the end, put the odds in your favour

There are a number of reasons you might become disillusioned with your job. When this happens, it is logical to consider the factors leading to dissatisfaction and then see if anything can be done about them. Taking action in a positive manner and with an open mind will result in one of two outcomes: things will be better and you will again find your work rewarding or you will feel the need to move with the sense that you put in a reasonable effort before jumping ship.

If your complaint with your current job is boredom, ask for more challenging assignments, …
