FED: Job cuts at Qantas could compromise safety union

A union says a decision to slash almost 1,500 jobs at Qantas is a cost-cutting measure
that will compromise safety.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union also hit out at the federal government for
its ideological approach to competition policy.

Qantas today announced plans to cut 220 executive and middle management positions in
the next fortnight, with a further 1,250 jobs to go over the next six months.

A Qantas spokesman says the cuts won't be in operational areas.
