John Smiley pitched a one-hitter to continue his domination ofthe Mets and Jeff King hit a two-run homer Wednesday night to leadthe Pittsburgh Pirates over New York 4-0 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Smiley (2-0) improved his career record against the Mets to 8-3.After allowing Kevin McReynolds' one-out double in the second, Smileyretired the final 23 Mets in order. Smiley walked none and struckout four in his third major-league shutout, his first since beatingSan Francisco 1-0 on April 28, 1989.
Friday, in his first 1991 start, Smiley allowed one run and fourhits in eight innings against the Cubs.
