WA: Police try to solve 34-year-old disappearance
By Selina Day
PERTH, Aug 29 AAP - Police in two states are working to solve the disappearance ofa Victorian woman, who was reported missing only recently - 34 years after she vanished.
Jean Climas, who would now be 55, disappeared from Bendigo in 1969 when she was 21.
She was married and had two young daughters, then aged six months and 18 months.
Police say Ms Climas' sister only recently reported the matter, saying she had someconcerns about her sister's disappearance.
"I suppose it's one of those things that, as time's gone on, some family members puttwo and two together, which they may not have looked at originally," Bendigo missing personsDetective Sergeant Brendan Murphy said today.
"At the time, her family was a bit fragmented, and they weren't really aware of whather circumstances were.
"I suppose, as the years have gone on, they've had that concern as to what's happenedwith her, and they've taken all this time, unfortunately, to come forward."
Det Sgt Murphy, who is being helped by West Australian police, said the passage oftime had made the investigation more difficult.
Although married and living with her truck-driver husband in Bendigo, Ms Climas washaving a relationship with a man from Melbourne, with whom she travelled to WA in 1969.
But police have established the man lived with her for only about two months beforeleaving Perth to travel around Australia. He later returned to Bendigo.
Police say Ms Climas - who may have used her maiden name Batten, or the alias Shaw- was living in a unit in the western Perth suburb of Mosman Park. The flat was abouta 15 minute walk from the Victoria St railway station.
She worked in a delicatessen, which was located on a corner.
Det Sgt Murphy said it was remarkable how sound people's memories were, and policealready had managed to compile a good picture of what Mosman Park was like in 1969.
"The main focus is to try and locate where she may have worked," he said.
"We'd like to talk to the people from the deli that may have employed her. They mayknow whether she was going to continue to live in WA or return to Victoria."
Police do not know whether Ms Climas is even alive, but are encouraged by the factthere are no records of her death.
