NZ claims against Incat 'nonsense': Clifford
Tasmanian fast ferry builder Incat says allegations it colluded to a put New Zealand
ferry company out of business are nonsense.
Incat chairman ROBERT CLIFFORD says the businessman whose allegations are being investigated
by the Commerce Commission -- the New Zealand equivalent of the ACCC -- is mischief-making.
Businessman and ferry operator BROOKE MCKENZIE has complained to the commission that
Incat and New Zealand's Tranz Rail colluded to stifle competition across Cook Strait between
the north and south islands.
Mr MCKENZIE co-founded Fast Cat Ferries which challenged Tranz Rail on the Cook Strait
run by leasing an Incat ferry about two years ago.
He says his relations with the company deteriorated after Incat bought into it and
he was later dismissed.
Mr CLIFFORD says after about three months of operation, the company was unable to pay
its charter fees, virtually forcing Incat to take a financial interest in it.
