Subscriber No. 20 million has signed up on America Online, thecompany reported Friday. But it doesn't know when or who it was.
AOL will add a few thousand more in the time it takes to read thisstory.
The Dulles, Va.-based company began providing Internet access in1985, and after five years, it topped 1 million subscribers. Lastmonth, Chief Executive Steve Case told a Chicago communicationsaudience, "It took us three months to add our last million." In thethree weeks since, AOL has added another million.
Those subscribers and the revenue AOL collects from advertisers onAOL and its other Internet properties, CompuServe and the Netscapebrowser, produced $4.8 billion in revenues for AOL in the year endedJune 30. Unlike many of its cyber brethren, AOL managed to bring $762million to the bottom line.
