SA: Democrat MPs deliver Woomera toys
ADELAIDE, Dec 20 AAP - Australian Democrat Senator Meg Lees and South Australian Democrat
MP Sandra Kanck today handed over hundreds of toys destined for children at the troubled
Woomera detention centre.
The toys were delivered to the local Catholic priest in the outback SA town this morning.
He will take them into the centre over the next few days.
Among the donated items were soft toys, board games and balls although some items which
could be used as weapons were removed.
A spokeswoman for Senator Lees said items such as cricket bats, umbrellas and strollers,
that could potentially be used to hurt someone, were given to another charity in Adelaide
instead of being taken to Woomera.
She said that action was taken given the trouble at Woomera over the past three nights
including fires and riots involving hundreds of detainees.
The incident also prevented Senator Lees and Ms Kanck from touring the Woomera complex.
