Qld: Preparations underway to get ship off reef
Preparations to drag a 73,000 tonne coal carrier off a far north Queensland sandbarare underway with two tugs expected to be at the ship today.
Salvage firm Adsteam Marine Limited has been given the job of getting the Greek-ownedship Doric Chariot off the sandbar at the end of Piper Reef, 600km north of Cairns.
A tug from Townsville was due to arrive late yesterday and another from Papua New Guineaovernight.
Chios Navigation, which represents the Doric Chariot's managers, says it will be possibleto safely refloat the ship in the very near future.
The ship, carrying a load of coal for India, ran aground on Monday.
